Megabanks Are Blocking Personal AI Agents. Community Institutions Shouldn't.

While megabanks are shutting out consumer AI agents to protect low deposit rates from friction-free comparison shopping, community institutions have a rare opportunity to capture those shifting funds. By deploying banking AI to boost operational efficiency and manage incoming agent traffic, regional banks and credit unions can offer competitive rates and win new depositors without sacrificing personalized service.

Megabanks are worried about more than security

The largest banks are moving to block consumers' personal AI agents from logging in and moving money. The stated reason is security and governance. The bigger reason is economics: In a market where AI agents shop for you, the institutions with the worst rates lose first.

This week alone, several of Glia’s regional and community bank and credit union customers asked us the same question: "We saw the megabanks shutting out these AI agents. What should we do?" Our answer: don't copy them. For community institutions, personal AI agents are a bigger opportunity than threat—if you're ready for them.

Friction helps big banks retain deposits

Quick test: Where is your savings account, and is its rate higher or lower than the one at your other bank?

Most people can't answer on the spot. That's the point.

Consumer banking is an illiquid market. Nobody wakes up and compares their three accounts against hundreds of other banks and credit unions. So money sits where it is, even when it's earning less than it could down the street.

Another word for that illiquidity is friction. Switching means moving funds, updating direct deposits and autopays, ordering a new card, and remembering every place your old account number lives. A lot of banking business models quietly depend on that hassle.

Personal AI agents turn friction into liquidity

An AI agent has infinite time and no inertia. It can check every rate every day and handle the whole switch in the background. Once that process becomes normal, deposits start flowing to whoever offers the best deal.

That reshuffles the market—at the expense of megabanks.

  • Megabanks typically offer the lowest deposit rates. In an AI agent-driven market, they lose first.
  • Regional and community banks and credit unions usually offer better rates than megabanks. Community institutions with competitive rates stand to benefit—if they can handle AI agent traffic.
  • Fintechs often offer the highest yields, so they come out on top.

So of course the megabanks are blocking AI agents. In a liquid market, they bleed deposits first.

But let’s also be honest: AI Agents won't just move money from megabanks to community institutions. Left alone, they'll move it to whichever fintech is paying the most this week.

We've seen this play before: Amazon

Amazon is pushing back on shopping AI agents too, and for the same reason. People shop there because it's easy to put 20 items in one cart. An AI agent doesn't care about easy. If the mouse is a dollar cheaper on the manufacturer's site, the AI agent buys it there—and does that for all 20 items.

Any business that profits from friction will resist AI agents. The megabanks are simply the banking version of that story.

The real gap is efficiency, not mission

Why can a fintech pay more than a credit union? Dedicated to serving their communities, credit unions work to maximize returns for members, not shareholders.

But community institutions carry legacy processes, manual handoffs, and cost structures that fintechs never had. Fintechs offer better rates simply because they run leaner. Not because they care about their customers more.

Create efficiency and the math changes. Every dollar of operating cost removed is a dollar that can go into better deposit rates and better loan rates.

The closer a regional bank or credit union gets to fintech-level efficiency, the higher it sits in the liquidity stack—and the more deposits it receives from AI agents routing away funds from the megabanks.

Banking AI is the key to unlocking that efficiency. But it raises a question, and it’s one that service-oriented community institutions have been asking for years: How can we create efficiency while protecting our personalized care?

Considering the rise of AI agents, it’s time to rephrase that question.

What if your 100,000 members acted like 1,000,000?

Today a credit union might serve 100,000 members. Imagine that tomorrow, each of those members has an AI agent—checking rates, asking questions, initiating transfers, opening accounts. Add the AI agents of non-members shopping your rates, and you could be fielding 10x the interactions you staff for today.

Who handles those interactions?

Not your frontline team. They’re already busy offering the expert, personalized service your community counts on. Forced to handle 10x volume, they'll be buried. Wait times climb, service slips, and friction pushes AI agents—and assets—somewhere else.

That's why community institutions need banking AI on their side of the conversation. AI Agents will increasingly talk to AI agents. Community institutions that can meet them with a secure, governed AI front door will capture the flow.

Those that can't will either block AI agents, like the megabanks, or drown in the traffic—and compromise the personalized service that’s always kept customers and members coming back.

Who owns the relationship when an AI agent shows up?

Imagine a new customer or member joins your community bank or credit union without seeing a marketing campaign, visiting a branch, or being referred by a friend. They joined because their AI agent found you. You had the best rate that day and they fit your field of membership.

That relationship started with a machine, and the human connection has to be earned.

This is the shift community institutions must prepare for. Banking AI helps them:

  • Create efficiency. Use banking AI to remove friction and cost from servicing, lending, and operations, then pass back those savings as better rates.
  • Open a secure front door for AI agents. Don't block AI agents that can bring new deposits to your institution. Give them a governed, authenticated way to interact so you can maintain security while remaining open to new business.
  • Scale service without scaling headcount. Automate routine interactions, like balance inquiries and routing number lookups, with voice AI, so you can handle interaction volume that grows faster than your membership.
  • Build relationships with agent-sourced depositors. When a new customer or member arrives via an AI agent, let your team make the first human interaction count.
